A paint riddle about a wet coat

This paint riddle plays on the word coat. Most of the time a coat is something worn: it has sleeves, it buttons up, and it hangs by the door. The riddle uses the other meaning, a single layer spread over a surface. Painters talk about a first coat and a second coat, and nobody pictures a jacket.

The older version asked what covering is always wet when it is put on. That left too many answers. Glue is wet when it goes on. So is varnish, plaster, and a fresh layer of nail polish. A riddle needs one fair answer, so this version points toward paint by describing a wet coating brushed onto a wall.

Wet is the second half of the joke. A coat that is worn should be dry, and a wet jacket is a problem. A coat of paint is supposed to be wet when it goes on. That is the moment it can spread evenly and fill the small marks on a wall.

The drying part has a plain explanation. Most interior wall paint sold today is water-based, often called latex or acrylic paint. As the water evaporates, the tiny particles of binder in the paint move closer together and fuse into a thin, flexible film that holds the color on the wall. That is why the label on a can lists two times: when the paint is dry to the touch, and when it is ready for another coat. The surface can feel dry well before the film underneath has finished forming.

So the second coat waits, not because the first one looks wet, but because the film below needs time to set. That is a useful fact to know before the next paint riddle, or the next weekend project.

The answer is a coat of paint: wet when the brush puts it on, and a layer of color once it dries.
